Course Length: The online course is delivered in four sessions, over four weeks, 90 mins per session.

Our ‘How to write your first novel’ course is the perfect introductory course for those looking to learn how to start writing fiction. Make this the year you finally write your novel!

In this introduction course:

  • We explore why you want to write, helping you build good habits and a writer’s mindset to ensure you see your novel through to the end. 

  • We’ll arm you with tools to prevent you from feeling the dreaded writer’s block. 

  • We talk you through all the elements that make up a novel - setting, characters, dialogue and structure.  

  • We’ll talk about publishing options.

  • Each week there will be a short homework task too, helping you to build momentum.

By the end of the course:

  • You’ll have a clear idea of your path forward for your novel. 

  • You’ll have taken part in lots of writing prompts that you’ll be able to expand and use for your novel.  

  • You’ll have a clear understanding of the importance of structuring your novel and creating a story that people will fall in love with.

  • You’ll have feedback on your written work (up to 1,500 words).

Whether you’re hoping to get your novel published or if you’re writing just for fun – this course will help you feel motivated and excited to start writing your first novel. 

  • • Week 1 is the start of our journey together. We begin by exploring creative writing.

    • Investigating what a novel is.

    • Develop your confidence in writing a novel.

    • Examine your personal approaches to writing and your goals.

    • Clarify what it takes to write a novel and where ideas come from.

  • • Week 2 is all about creating characters.

    • You will be clear on why characters are important in fiction.

    • You will start to explore the elements that make a strong character.

    • You will explore why backstory is important.

    • You will learn how to create characters that readers care about.

    • You will understand the importance of showing your reader who your character is, rather than telling them.

  • • Week 3 is all about plotting and structuring your novel.

    • By the end of week, 3 you will know why story structure is important.

    • You will start to explore the elements that make a story.

    • You will explore your personal preferences to story structure.

    • You will learn how to create structure and plot within your novel.

    • You will understand the importance of hooking your readers at the beginning of your novel.

    • You will start to explore the elements that make up a genre.

  • • Week 4 arms you with tools to keep writing and helps you to plan your next steps.

    • You will start to review your learning and start to develop an action plan to move forward.

    • You will learn about point of view and story narration.

    • You will start to explore description and worldbuilding.

    • You will start to explore the publishing options available to you and understand what expectations agents have when submitting your work.

    • You will learn how to present your written work.

What’s more:

  • We will provide feedback on up to 1,500 words of your work. Helping you to see your writing strengths and giving you ideas to help take your work further. 

  • You’ll have unlimited email support throughout the course, should you have questions or need help. 

  • After completing the course you’ll gain access to a private storyteller’s Facebook group, exclusively for our course alumni. The group is bursting with regular ideas, prompts, tips and a supportive community full of like-minded people to help you on your writing journey. 

This course will be delivered via Zoom, you will need an internet connection and a device (Ipad/ Laptop/ PC) to access the course. Whilst we are based in Derbyshire (UK), you can join us from anywhere in the world.

Our courses are fast-paced and jam-packed, we cram a lot in. We expect you to take part too, sharing ideas and supporting others on your course. We arm you with tools, but you’ve got to put the work in, writing a novel isn’t for the faint-hearted, but we know you can do it!
